Meet Avalon Yarnes

Avalon Yarnes -- aka -- your resident sugar mentor -- is the woman behind Avalon Cakes School of Sugar Art, an online platform for cake and sugar art enthusiasts to learn and explore. She’s also the woman behind The Cake and Cookie Planner, an award-winning line of products for planning and sketching cakes and cookies. Avalon found her love for art at a young age, but it wasn't until she began her first job at fifteen that she found her love for baking. Ever since she entered the sweet side of the food industry, she has been challenging herself to go above and beyond. Her passion lies in presenting cake in a form, formerly reserved for traditional sculpture, brush, and paper. She found her "happy place" bringing both art forms together. Avalon learned how to create cakes and sugar art through experience and experimentation. Whether it's realistic busts, defying gravity, delicate flowers, or making colorful watercolor paintings, most of all, she enjoys sharing her findings and teaching others. She has had the honor of being awarded Best Novelty Cakes Artist and one of the Top 10 Cake Artists of North America. You can also find her on television shows like Food Network Challenge and Duff Till Dawn. Her work can also be found featured in top bakery blogs, magazines and books.

How it came to be...

In the summer of 2000, my mother landed her fifteen-year-old daughter her very first job (that's me!). I was a bakery counter clerk at a small family-owned market. Although my job was to simply hand the pastries off to the customer, maybe make them a cappuccino, and then take their money -- I would have never guessed that summer was going to set me down the path to where I am right now.

So how did I become so obsessed with sugar?

Well, this story actually does not begin with me covered in flour at the young age of five. Don't get me wrong, I always loved sweets. Heck, I'd push a plate of spaghetti right off the table if it meant I could have a scoop of ice cream (yet, that rarely happened, go figure). My love for creating art began as young as I can remember. I would buy a comic book, not to read, but to try and redraw the characters. My love of baking was awakened at age fifteen, the moment I stepped into that bakery.

However, the truly special ah-ha moment happened when I realized cake and art could work hand in hand, like a beautiful co-mingling of two souls fated to be together.. (was that corny or what? haha)

From the moment I realized cake and art came together so perfectly and could be so satisfying, not only to me but to my customers, I was FULL STEAM AHEAD! I created Avalon Cakes as a cake studio that made custom cakes for any type of special event.

Now, more than 10 years later, I have baked, iced, carved, modeled, manipulated, defied gravity and ate OH-so-much cake.  I love how versatile it is as a medium. I tapped into so many art forms with cake; sculpting, painting, sketching, abstract, realism, cartoon, etc.

Now, most of all, I enjoy teaching and sharing with others the knowledge and experiences I have gained over the years. My aim through this platform is to share and create a community of like-minded artists with a passion for their craft. A place for us all to tap into our inner artists and flourish our careers into something that feeds our creative souls, while also making our customers extremely happy.
