Fashion. Fashion is one of the largest inspirations to many cake designers. We can pull ideas from the high end, haute couture runways! And yet we can also find inspiration in our classic favorite spring dress.
"As well as colour, lines and form probably influence me the most in designing a cake. There are no more beautiful lines or form than in haute couture fashion. The runways of high fashion provide such inspiration and really show an insight as to what will be trending in colour as well as style, for the whole year to come." - Jacki Fanto
I say, lets skip the romance and dive right in...
Those botanical beauties will always inspire the big day. However, flower trends are always changing...
This is one of my personal favorites. Wildflowers, better yet, wild SUGAR flowers. Artisan Cake Company pairs Magnolias with beautiful Lavender and small pops of yellow. Then we have some absolutely gorgeous little blossoms from the wildflower queen, Amy Swann Cakes. Look at those tiny little petals!
Cake? No. Match your cake? Yes! You have this gorgeous cake covered in gorgeous hand made flowers.. why not add a matching halo to the scenario? Sure is a gorgeous touch to pull everything together. And, they won't wilt away by the end of the day! Big bonus, that means you officially get a crown to wear around your kingdom! Yes, that means you can run around your house, whenever you want, wearing your crown of flowers and your bathrobe.
Both All the Kings Horses (edible) and Bandeau d'Amour by Amy Swann (non-edible) will create beautiful masterpieces for you to keep forever.
The beauty is in the details! These small, gorgeous little blossoms can create a big impact. Notice how the blossoms create there own patterns and shapes, bringing a whole new element for the eye to enjoy. Accents become a center stage with these beauties.
As the industry moves forward, artists and brides both, find themselves becoming more creative and daring with florals. Arrangements encompassing not only gorgeous flowers but expression through placement and bold colors!
Big! Tall and lean cakes have pushed, no shoved, all the others out of the way. I imagine the "tall and lean" cake with a sassy personality, using it's hips to bump the others to the side. For the record, I fully support curves! Create that tall and lean look by not only creating more cake tiers, but taller cake tiers! A 6" tall tier can make all the difference. Another route to go, that has become increasingly popular, is a variety of tier heights.
"After the couple, the cake is the most photographed of the wedding elements. It takes a prominent position in the room and really takes the decor to the next level. As well as being part of the decor, a big statement cake will generate excitement and buzz with guests as many of them will want to take a selfie with it and share on social media. If a wedding has been designed to make a splash, then the huge statement cake will continue to be in demand" - Faye Cahill
Wafer Paper... it may not taste like anything, but that is when I would tell you, stop trying to eat paper just cause it's edible. 😉 I won't stop you from eating the flower, but I will laugh at your expression as you do so. It serves the divine purpose of allowing us to bring an edible medium into our cakey worlds that can do things that fondant wouldn't dare. Although wafer paper has been around for decades, it has been re-born into the new and modern world of cake art. Stevi Fransen-Auble, of Hey There, Cupcake!, has been at the forefront of wafer paper design. She began creating her signature wafer flowers, wraps, and other techniques back in 2010. Five years later, everyone wants, and is, getting their hands on it!
Ah yes, black. Many fight the urge to bring it into their wedding day. Yet, the daring that does embrace their dark side, end up with a gorgeous and unique wedding cake that their guests won't soon forget. From the recent introduction of chalkboard cakes to the striking contrast of black and bright, black is back baby! Don't fight it...
Who can resist a hand-painted cake? Beautiful, one of a kind art! On a fresh new beautifully stretched canvas, I mean, fondant. It's amazing what can be done with a little food color!
Notice how most of these cakes not only fit into one trend category, but they can fit into multiple. Black cakes with hand painting, a wafer with metallics, and so on.
For all you cake artists out there: I encourage you to take 2015 and push your limits, try new things, and maybe you'll start a new trend for 2016!
For the brides: Don't be afraid to be daring and different! This is YOUR big day, make it memorable, and make it reflect you and your unique personality!
That concludes the Wedding Cake Trend 2015 series. Hope you enjoyed our sunny forecast!
