Cake Calculator Guidelines

All calculations from the calculator are based on the following:

  • All cakes are baked in 2” high pans (with parchment collars), and then split to create 1” layers.
  • 1/4” thick coating icing (your outer layer of icing, not including your filling)
  • Cake batter, filling and icing measurements automatically calculate to round up to the nearest cup. This allows a little room for variations in your measurements (some of us are more light/heavy-handed than others).

Adjustable Variables

  • Batter filling, choose 1/2 full or 2/3 full:
    • Common measurements:
      • 1/2 full for most box cake mixes
      • 2/3 full for most scratch cake batter
      • You know your cake recipe best, so choose according to your own experience (1/2 or 2/3).
  • Filling: 1/4” or 1/2” thick filling
Important Note: Measurements will never be "exact". With so many variables easily altered (ie: how much air you whip into the batter, how heavy-handed one person is vs. the other, etc), it is impossible to create exact, perfect numbers. The cake calculators are here as a tool to make estimations for your needs.
